Embrace the Dust

You are currently viewing Embrace the Dust

Burning Man isn’t just an event…it’s a wild, dusty, sun-soaked pilgrimage to the middle of nowhere, or what we call “home”. It’s magic and chaos rolled into one, with art, music, and an awesome community. But be warned…surviving and thriving in the Nevada desert is serious business. Your safety is not something to wing or improvise. With dust storms that feel like nature’s way of keeping you humble, UV rays that could roast a marshmallow, and dehydration lurking around every corner, staying healthy out there requires some solid planning. (We’ll leave out any other, err, “extra curricular” options).

Battle Plan for Dust (Protecting Your Eyes, Ears, and Lungs)

The dust is relentless, and it’s coming for you. Playa dust is alkaline, super fine, and clings to you worse than that ex that texts you at 2 am.

Gear Up for Dust Survival:

  • Goggles are non-negotiable. Go for a pair that seals fully around your eyes. If you wear glasses, make sure that they fit over them. Ski goggles are a good option.
  • dust mask, like a (K)N95 or a reusable respirator, is important, especially when a whiteout hits. You shouldn’t just tie a bandana around your face like the Lone Ranger. On the flip side, keep track of that disposable mask, and don’t let it become moop.
  • Don’t forget earplugs, either. They’re not just for blocking out your neighbor’s 3 AM techno set; they also keep the dust out of your ears during a storm. (Be prepared to use ear wash when you get home!)

Keep all of these in your “go bag” (I’ll write a blog about that in the future). The BRC loves to catch you off guard when you’re in the deep playa.

Hydration Station

The battle against dehydration is real. Between the dry air and abundance of alcoholic beverages, the playa will zap your water reserves like they’re a free cocktail at happy hour.

The Simple Math of Survival:

  • Drink at least one gallon of water daily. More if you’re dancing like your life depends on it.
  • Start the day with electrolytes. Whether it’s a fancy hydration tablet or plain ol’ Gatorade powder, your body will thank you for replenishing those lost salts.

Keep an eye out for dehydration symptoms like dizziness, extreme fatigue, or a pounding headache. If they happen, take a break at a recovery camp, like the Temple of Bacchus.

Playa Foot…It’s a Thing.

While I’ve never experienced playa foot, I understand it is a thing. Playa dust can dry out your skin leading to cracked, painful feet.

Playa Foot Prevention Tips:

  1. Wash your feet daily with vinegar and water (the acid helps balance the dust’s alkalinity).
  2. Slather on a thick moisturizer or coconut oil before bed.
  3. Wear socks! Yes, even with sandals if you must; it’s worth the fashion crime to avoid hobbling around like a pirate.

Heat, Chill, and Everything in Between

Burning Man’s temperature swings are like the aforementioned ex. It can be blisteringly hot during the day (sometimes over 100°F) and surprisingly cold at night (40°F and lower). Balancing these extremes can be a real trick. Throw in unexpected rain (read: Mudman 2022), and you’ll be glad you were prepared.

Handling Heat Like a Pro:

  • Seek shade during peak sun hours (11 AM – 3 PM). Did I mention the hammock/cushion lounge in the Temple of Bacchus?
  • Got water? Drench a scarf and wear it over your head like a durag. Splash it on your neck or wrists, which helps in a pinch.
  • Feeling woozy or seeing stars? Stop everything, sit down, and sip water or an electrolyte drink until you feel steady again. You didn’t leave camp without water in your go bag.

And when the temperature nosedives at night? Layer, layer, layer. Bring that bitchen coat…and make sure it’s lit up. The playa is a dark place.

Bonus Tips for Staying Sane in the Mayhem

  • Pace Yourself: Burnout is real. Sleep. Rest. Recharge.
  • Snacks for the Win: Portable snacks are lifesavers. Pack salty snacks to keep sodium levels balanced.
  • Mind Over Mayhem: Take a break when needed. The desert will still be there after a quick nap.

Burn Your Own Burn

Burning Man is about art, freedom, and self-expression. Take care of your body, soak up the sunsets, and when you’re back home, you’ll share dusty stories instead of your trip to Rampart.
